What is SSL VPN?

As mobile applications and remote expansion grows, so do the challenges of securing a network while making sure users and especially clients have fast applications access. With emerging mobile technologies, thriving global markets and heightened focus on disaster preparedness, remote access control has become a business imperative. The modern mobile workforce demands secure access to data, information and more resources from more remote devices and platforms such desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets.

Secure Sockets Layer Virtual Private Network (SSL VPN) is a form of private V.P.N. that can be used with standard Web browsers including mobile browsers. Unlike in Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) VPNs where there is need for end-users to have specialized client software, an SSL VPN does not require the installation of specialized client software on the end user’s computer. SSL VPN gives remote users access to Web applications, client and server applications and internal network connections.

Many organizations install SSL VPN as way to ensure faster and more secure access to apps from corporate desktops and mobile devices where there is need to supports many users. SSL VPN can simplify management by integrating mobile device management and SSL VPN access in a comprehensive solution. Virtual Private Networks provide secure communications for routed data and other information transmitted between two endpoints.

An SSL VPN consists of one or more VPN devices to which the user connects by using his Web browser. The traffic between the Web browser and the SSL VPN device is encrypted with the SSL protocol or its successor, the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol. For many organizations that deals with clients connected to their Virtual Private Network, SSL VPN and can provide flexibility and scalability. An SSL VPN offers adaptability, user-friendliness and granular control for a range of users when accessing resources from many locations, often on mobile devices. SSL VPN can provide tailor-made solutions to suit different environment needs.

Some SSL VPN solutions can allow remote users to easily access corporate resources without requiring network administrators to give up control. Administrators can create policies that lock down users to specific resources and applications to effectively manage access from trusted users and devices as well as un-trusted ones. Other SSL VPN solutions can lower organization operational costs especially on IT applications by enabling network managers to easily deploy and manage a single secure access gateway that extends remote access via SSL VPN for both internal and external users to all network resources. Such solutions can be configured to include Web-based resources, Client/Server resources, host-based resources and back-connect applications like VoIP.
